Death

In 278 BC, the Chu State was conquered by the Qin State. Qu Yuan, who was living in exile at the time, was heartbroken to hear the news. He threw himself into the Miluo River as a sign of his grief. Legend has it that the people of Chu searched the river for his body, and when they couldn't find it, they threw rice into the waters to feed his spirit.

Legacy

Qu Yuan's poetry has been celebrated for centuries in China. He is considered one of the greatest poets in Chinese history and his work has been studied by scholars and students for generations. The Dragon Boat Festival, which takes place in June, is said to commemorate the search for Qu Yuan's body. During the festival, people race dragon boats and eat rice dumplings, called zongzi, in honor of Qu Yuan.
